Course Description The seminar is an introductory level course to the field of low vision rehabilitation designed to help therapists develop a comprehensive understanding of how low vision can impact the therapy process. Participants will explore through an experiential hands-on-approach as well as interactive presentations. The following areas will be reviewed: Conditions that cause low vision in the older adult population, vision screening vs. low vision evaluation components, low vision principles, equipment and safe mobility techniques to incorporate in intervention plans, and referral system and resources available for this population. Course Objectives Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to: * Describe eye diseases that result in low vision and their impact on daily life. * Understand the components of a vision screening and a low vision evaluation for clients with low vision. * Describe low vision principles to incorporate into treatment plans. * Demonstrate safe travel methods when assisting a person with low vision. * Adapt community and home environments of persons with low vision to maximize safety and occupational performance. * Understand how to collaborate with eye care specialists and other professionals to better design evaluation and intervention strategies. * Review community and national resources available for persons with low vision. |
